Basic Race Management Seminar

The US SAILING Race Management Committee and Island Bay Yacht Club sponsor this seminar. It is designed for people who have some race committee experience, but newcomers are also welcome. It will be held at Island Bay Yacht Club in Springfield, Illinois (Directions). The seminar will be one full day session, beginning at 0800 and ending at 1630.

  • Setting the Course
  • Starting System
  • Starting Penalties
  • Before the Start
  • During the Race
  • Finishing
  • Scoring

The instructor for the seminar will be John Strassman. John is a certified Area Race Officer as well as a certified Judge and teaches numerous clinics each year on both race management and the racing rules. Phil Peterson, a certified Club Race Officer from Island Bay Yacht Club, will assist John.

At the seminar you will need your own copy of The Racing Rules of Sailing ("RRS"), and you will be given a copy of Join the Race Committee Team. To prepare for the seminar each participant should try to answer the Basic Seminar Study Questions, which are available on the US SAILING web site at:

The Club Race Officer certification test will be given at the conclusion of the seminar. Taking the test is optional. However, in order to be certified as a US SAILING Club Race Officer, you are required to attend a complete basic seminar and pass the test. Also, in order to be certified, you will need to be a member of US SAILING, own a copy of the current US SAILING Race Management Handbook, and meet the program’s other criteria.

The seminar fee is $50 for US SAILING members and $60 for non-members. Lunch is included in the fee. Please make your check payable to Island Bay Yacht Club and mail to:

Advance registration is essential and you may do so on-line or by regular mail. It you plan to attend, please register on line by finding the seminar on the calendar at the US SAILING web site and, under the date, find and click on Register On-Line.
